Disney Musicals are BACK!!! November 23, 2009 Jerrod M. Miller 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
I have just purchased this soundtrack and may I say, THANK YOU DISNEY for bringing this timeless era to life again!
The Jazz Age is my favorite genre of music and the 1920's is my ABSOLUTE favorite time in history. And Randy Newman's songs and score are so well put together!
Disney's renaissance era(The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, etc.) would be so proud, in terms of music. Now I will admit it doesn't have that same intensity then the great Alan Menken's scores, but Randy Newman is dead behind him.
Now dispite the contraversy and racism(the first african american princess, her getting turned into a frog, the time period, and the black magic), this is now the time for change and this movie will prove that you can look past all that and enjoy it, like ALL Disney movies do.
Now I'm not someone who makes up someones mind for them, but people please, don't let the opinion of every tom, dick, and harry stop you from missing out on something that is as CLASSIC, TRUE Disney as this looks.
Now for the music...4.8 out of 5 stars! It couldn't have been done any better than this! These songs are SO perfectly done by Mr. Randy Newman, If he doesn't get an Oscar Nomination for Best Song or Score I'll be shocked.
1. Never knew I Needed - 4 out of 5 stars - It has an awesome beat and feeling to it, but the R&B is a little off for this particular genre.
2. Down in New Orleans(Prologue) - 5 out of 5 stars - Anika Noni Rose(beautiful voice) does an amazing job at bringing the excitment out of what's to come in just 30 seconds.
3. Down in New Orleans - 5 out of 5 stars - Randy Newman through and through, it is a wonderful depiction of New Orleans, past and present, I just wish it had some improvasation.
4. Almost There* - 5 out of 5 stars - Not your typical Disney Princess song and that's why I think its gonna get one of the Oscar Noms. for best original song and Anika Noni Rose is perfectly casted as Princess Tiana, a strong and independent woman who has big dreams and knows that she can get them.
5. Friends on the Other Side* - 5 out of 5 stars - Now this is real Disney, A Phemoninal bad guy with style! This is my personal favorite, dirty & evil jazz. Keith David...words can't explain this performance but YYYEESS!! It should be an Oscar Nom. just for entertainment purposes. ARE YOU READY?!?
6. When We're Human - 5 out of 5 stars - This is just fun! Pure up-beat swing(reminisces of the great "Bare Necessities" and legendary jazz musicans Louie Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller) Great trumpet wailing and great lyrics for each character that defines who they are and who they always will be.
7. Gonna Take you there - 4 out of 5 stars - It's perfect cajun and zydeco, but it just wasn't enough it just sounded like a section in the movie than an actual song but I like the beat.
8. Ma Belle Evangeline - 5 out of 5 stars - Ray, the lovesick Cajun firefly, sings about his love, Evangeline, and its so wonderfully OLD-FANSHIONED Disney. Jim Cummings performance is both heart-warming and funny (and beautiful trumpet playing).
9. Dig a Little Deeper* - 5 out of 5 stars - This is the true message of the movie. "Find out who you are and you'll find out what you need" It's a fun up-beat gospel extravagenza, done by the hilarious and talented Jenifer Lewis. This will be another Oscar Nom. for entertainment purposes but if something is gonna win, its either this or ALMOST THERE.
10. Down in New Orleans(Finale) - 5 out of 5 stars - Anika Noni Rose sends you leaving with a bone-chilling and memorable ending that couldn't have been said any better.
11. - 17. THE SCORE - 4.5 out of 5 stars - Its strings(voilin, viola, cello, bass and even banjo) are remarkable and the jazz and country bluegrass and spiritual licks are surpising and make the slow, beautiful stuff all the better and the ending score is so majestic and fanfarish, its the perfect compliment of instrumental playing to the songs.
Growing up with Disney has been fantastic, Disney makes you lose yourself in your bad times and it always makes you smile and laugh and cry and relate and everything in between. So with all of these classics in my home,I know that THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG will be right up there with them.
Can't stop listening! December 28, 2009 M. Linden (California) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a fabulous soundtrack to a fantastic movie! I got it as a gift for Christmas after seeing the movie a few weeks ago and I cannot stop listening to it! Even my dad loves it, though he hasn't seen the movie yet. The song styles are all very different, my favorites being "Down in New Orleans" and "When We're Human". This CD just makes make me want to dance!
love it November 24, 2009 Deirdre Simmons (CA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Just bought this album. I absolutely love the blend of New Orleans sounds used in the singing tracks. Broadway, Cajun, ragtime, & gospel sounds are used through out the whole ablum. My favorite songs are, GONNA TAKE YOU THERE, MA BELLE EVANGELINE & DIG A LITTLE DEEPER. Also I really enjoyed the score which included the same blend of sounds; but what I liked best was how it remained very soft and beautiful with out being boring & included the Disney/ Fairytale touch. I think this album was well thought out and it shows. Only thing is, I would have put the Ne-Yo pop song at the end of the album instead of the 1st song b/c (aside from the lyrics) it doesnt fit well with the rest of the album which is very classic. My one other complaint though was that I was hoping that big score number used in the commercial would be on the album but it wasnt. Guess I was just pipe dreaming. I'll get over it. =) Cant wait to see the movie, hope my review was helpful.
Finally a Worthy Disney Soundtrack!!! November 27, 2009 Don Vito Corleone (Sleeping with the Fishes) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm glad to see that Disney is returning to its roots and delivering a significant movie with a great soundtrack the way they know. I'm very excited about this new movie and it seems that it will be wonderful. At first, I was a little worried that Randy Newman will be doing the songs and the score. Sure he is a very talented guy and the Pixar soundtracks are really good, but Pixar don't make musicals. I thought that the man to do this was the legendary Alan Menken but fortunately, Newman proof to be a terrific composer and this soundtrack is one of the best I've heard. The Songs Down in New Orleans, Almost There, Friends on the Other Side, When We're Human, Gotta take you there, Ma Belle Evangeline and Dig a Little Deeper (my personal favorite) are full of life and rythm. Sure not everything is perfect and as usual Disney marketing campaign also added an R&B song performed by Ne-Yo (Never Knew I Needed), the song is not terrible but is not memorable and just doesn't fit with the rest of the soundtrack. Aside from that all the other songs are terrific and the vocal performances of the singers are top-notch (especially Anika Noni Rose, Jenifer Lewis and Keith David). I rate this soundtrack five stars despite the Ne-Yo song because I consider this a minor flaw. The score is also really good. Let's just say that if the movie is like the songs, it will be AWESOME.
Fantastic my favorite Randy Newman/Disney music so far March 9, 2010 C. A Baker (Santa Rosa CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic album with songs that get stuck in your head and make you smile. The score pieces are lovely and compliment the songs.
Randy Newman has mostly done the Pixar/Disney films but he deffinitely pulled out some fo his best stuff here. I first heard soem fo the music over New Years at Disenyland that music prompted me to get off my butt and see teh film which then got to go home and imediately order this cd.
I could live without the silly pop song on track one but everything else is beautifully done and very memorable.
